Judah's Journey

So Judah said to his brothers, 'What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come and let us sell him . . . .' --Genesis 37:26-27 (NKJV)

Joseph's brothers were sick of him. Not only was he their father's undisputed favorite, but lately Joseph had begun to have dreams of them bowing down to him. The mere presence of Joseph became an increasingly difficult burden for them to bear, and so at the first opportunity to get rid of him, they threw him into a pit and left him for dead.

Off on the horizon, they spotted a caravan of traders headed for Egypt. Judah had the idea to make some money by selling Joseph as a slave; this reveals an important insight into Judah's self-centered nature.

Fast-forward twenty years, and now the roles are reversed. Joseph had become the second most powerful man in Egypt, and through a set of divinely ordained events, his brothers are forced to approach him and beg for food. They don't recognize Joseph, but he recognizes them. Amazingly, he did not seek revenge but sought reconciliation with them. But before there could be reconciliation, he needed to see transformation, so Joseph set up a test to see if their hearts had changed over the years.

He gave them the same opportunity to selfishly sell out one of their other brothers for their own benefit, and it is Judah (the one with the greatest guilt) who rises up and offers to suffer in another's place (Genesis 44:33). By doing so, Judah demonstrated that his heart had made the journey from the place of being self-centered to the place of being selfless. Joseph wept at this point because he now knew that the transformation was complete and that the door to reconciliation was finally open.

The change that we witness in Judah is a hint of what ought to happen in us as we become new creations in Christ. Our old motives for personal profit are exchanged for a desire to profit and benefit others. Interestingly enough, Judah's name means 'praise,' which is also our natural reaction toward God as He works this transformation in us.

Email from my Home Fellowship Group:

We need to be praying for Kurt today as he is in Florida and has an appt. w/the Cancer Center there in Tampa. Kurt's family has been pleading with him to investigate what the Center may have to offer him and he wants to honor his family by at least checking it out. When a serious illness comes into our lives so many well-meaning voices from those people who love us come pouring in. My prayer is that we continue to pray that the Lord will give Kurt Wisdom and Discernment regarding what is the Way that the Lord desires for Kurt to take. He is also asking that we pray for this time w/his family there in Florida.. that it will be a sweet time of fellowship w/them and all that the Lord desires it to be.

My Reply to All:
As a family member whom is experiencing this agony first hand, it is my humble opinion that Kurt should check into the Cancer Center. Yes, I loss my mother and older sister because some critical medical decisions, therefore second opinions are important. My father is in remission for 11 years as result of consulting with best. My younger sister followed my father advice and is remission for 2 years. All family members need genetic test, BROC. Early detection and family history is important.

I make these assertions with tears and emotional pain for us all.

However, Kurt does need our opinions as much as our prayers.

My Testimony

I was raised in a typical lifestyle of suburbia in the Northeastern United States. My Catholic mother and Catechism classes influenced my early religious experiences. These experiences were interesting through high school, but my Protestant father’s influence and my education left me with many questions. However, I had a spiritual awakening on July 2, 1986 at age 28 after more than 15 years of active addiction. I entered recovery and my spiritual life was totally centered on a 12-step program. The life was good, but I knew in my heart something was missing. After nine years of recovery, I knew addiction was not the answer, but the spiritual pain was overwhelming. (The term spiritual here is a New Secularism way of defining an emotional state as related to a Higher Power and not a relationship with Jesus Christ.) I had a career and prosperity, but Beamers and condos did not satisfy. I was educated but my intellectual life was dormant to the point of depression.

In the mid-90’s I began seeking God in the various Churches. I remember thinking I was some kind of closet Christian because I had began discretely reading the Bible more after I began recovery. The Bible reading gave me some simple awakenings. For example, Matthew 6:10 the instruction was that God put me on earth and I was not in heaven. I needed a vocabulary lesson because words like “believe” and “Heaven” had so many worldly magical inferences. The Bible helped me to realize my need for a Savior. When I changed my 12-step sponsor to someone I thought was a Christian, I said, “If I am in this much spiritual pain in a year then I am leaving.” (Again a New Secularism term of spiritual) That turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. One good thing this sponsor did was to introduce me to Christians who were attending a church in Philadelphia. I followed them and started attending this church, Calvary Chapel Philadelphia.

At this church, I watched the altar calls in amazement as people were coming to Jesus Christ. In a 1982 Christian concert, I foolishly thought the church planted people in the audience to go forward and accept Jesus.

One day, the pastor, Joe Focht, of Calvary Chapel Philadelphia made a small comment from the pulpit that struck a cord. He said, “Ok, you got clean from drugs and alcohol. Now you’re saved. So, let’s move on the next chapter” and then he flicked a page of the Bible over as if the discussion was finished. My jaw dropped and I said, “Wait a minute it can’t be that simple! I just spent all these years working on my spiritual program. There must be more!” I learned the blood of Jesus was the only way because my spiritual program had just revealed my sin.

This testimony may seem like one of those radical salvation stories, but finding redemption and hearing the Lord’s voice were very private and personal events. On February 19, 1996 I got a tattoo in a last ditch effort to hold on to my sin, because the Church will never accept an addict like me, recovered or not. In a short time afterwards, I was listening to Greg Laurie of Harvest Crusade on my BMW radio parked in my condo driveway. Greg made an invitation; I bowed and prayed to receive Jesus Christ as my personal Savior.

I struggled with assurance because I did not make a public profession. However, a few months later at a Christian concert I when forward at an alter call and told the counselor that this was rededication prayer. In July of that year, I found myself on Grafton Street in Dublin Ireland on a summer mission trip. I wish I had the time and space to tell the story of how I first heard the voice of Jesus on Grafton with the team. I know that I know Him because I heard His voice personally.

I have been obedient to His calling in my eight-year walk the Lord. He showed me the inerrancy of the Scripture through Child Evangelism Fellowship. The Lord has allowed me to serve with Harvest Crusades and in Sunday School. These ministries helped me to grow and prepare for the ministry at JAARS. As a result being here at JAARS can only be a testament that my Jesus loves me.

Let’s be honest: most of our family trees aren’t very pretty. In fact, for most of us, those branches are filled with adultery, pornography, divorce, substance abuse, addiction, physical violence, and more. And even if your family hasn’t been affected by one of these, your family history hasn’t failed to affect you in one way or another.

At some point, then, every man must decide: will I purify my branch of the family tree, or will I allow this poison to seep through to another generation?

Purifying your branch of the family tree begins with driving a stake into the ground with the decision that you and your family will follow Him.

When you do this, you transition your family from a pattern of sickness to the possibility of living for God. For generations to come, people will look at your family tree and see that under your leadership, life was influenced for good rather than for evil.

Going against the trends of past generations isn’t easy to do. But it’s worth the effort to blaze a new path—a path that’s honorable; a path that’s worth following; and a path that will show God’s grace and goodness to future generations.

Let us first turn to the romance with God. How has he been wooing you? What has stirred your heart over the years?

We cannot control what the Romancer is up to, but there is a posture we can take. There is an openness to this stage that will enable us to recognize and receive the wooing. So let me ask—are you willing to let go of your insistence to control, meaning, to allow for a life that exists beyond the realm of analysis, to let some portions of your life be impractical, to cease evaluating all things based on their utility and function? Coming closer to the heart, are you willing to let passion rise in you, though undoubtedly it may unnerve you? To permit the healing of some of your deepest wounds? To let yourself be run through as with a rapier by Beauty itself? Are you willing, at some level, to be undone?

Then we may proceed.

To enter into the Romance we must slow down, or we will miss the wooing. Turn off the news and put on some music. Take a walk. Take up painting, or writing or reading poetry. Better still, what was it that stirred your heart over the years? Go and get it back.

This is hard to do, especially for men who are out conquering the world. But remember—what the evil one does to a good warrior if he cannot keep him the battle is to bury him in battles. But life is not all about the battle. The Romance is always central. Listen again to David:

Though an army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then will I be confident.
One thing I ask of the LORD,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD. (Ps. 27:3–4 NIV)

He knows battle, knows what it is to have God come through for him. He does not fear it; he is confidant as a seasoned warrior is confidant. But, he does not make it his heart’s desire. What he seeks is not battle—what he seeks is the romance with God. “To gaze upon the beauty of the LORD.”

I went to California for a two week vacation on July 5, 1977 and decided to stay. Mom mailed me this letter on August 26. In preparing Beth's eulogy, I found it a box labeled Memorabilia, that has been in storage for years. As reflected on it, I saw how my Mother's love was passed down to my sister. My heart was share my private letter as memorial to my sister's love, therefore it is now open letter. As I stood is the pulpit at my sister's viewing I read the letter was dated August 26. Mom wrote my letter 30 years to date and I almost lost it. Well, I did. Please continue to share our stories of love.

Beth announcement

Dear friends and family,

My sister, Beth, passed at 8:39AM, Wednesday, August, 22, 2007. Happenstance, Mom passed at 8:41PM, Friday, August, 30, 1985 of the same disease and near the same age.

Lee, Cheryl's husband, told me she fought all night. I hope Cheryl and the family there gets some rest today.

Cheryl and I stayed up late Saturday night going through photos. Jimmie, her husband, wants to blow up a few because it will be closed casket.

Beth's wish was to not have a religious service, one for the intermediate family and another for everyone else. Their another wish to have wake at the hotel accompanied by festivity.

My niece and nephew don't recognize their Uncle Dan. Marissa is 10~ and Stone is 8. I hope can connect with them somehow.

My family has asked me for a eulogy. I have written out sometime, however it needs some revision to the sensitivities on my family.

Plans have been made, however no date is set yet. Jimmie wants to want to get give the family time to get there. We have large extended family, 45 cousins. We'd love to see you. Stay tuned for more details.

(1 Thessalonians 1:2) Do you give thanks to God for those He has placed in your life, even though that person may not be a real joy to deal with? Do you pray for someone without knowing why you are praying for them, only to find out that, they were in dire need of prayer and intercession? God places people on our hearts so we may stand in the gap, in prayer for even the unknown things. many times I have prayed for someone, only to find out, they really needed it. Never discard an impression from God as your thought and not His. After all, the more we pray, the more we stand before His Throne and the more we get to know Him and His love. So know for sure, that someone on this list, or someone across the globe, myself, is in prayer for you at any given moment when God places you on a praying heart.

Lord God, thank You for the love and compassion You have for me, and may I show that love and compassion to others. Thank You for the gift of prayer and especially for the times You place someone on my heart to pray for. Thank You for those who pray for me, sometimes inadvertently, not knowing why, yet continue to lift my needs and concerns to You. Bless each one here today, meet their needs and provide for their comfort. This is my prayer in Jesus name, amen.

Urgent Prayer Request from Kurt Wiltsey

Kurt requested prayer for healing.

He is very sick and been in the hospital.

They did an MRI and the doctors are concerned about a possible tumor in his digestive system.

He was at a family reunion with his family in the mountains.
The plan is to have someone drive his car back to Charlotte tomorrow, Saturday.

There’s an old story of a certain young boy who wrote a letter to God about the Christmas presents he wanted: “I’ve been good for six months now,” wrote the lad. Then, after some reflection, he erased six months and scribbled in a more modest three months. After some more reflection he erased that too, and replaced it with two weeks. After yet another pause, he erased that too.

The boy then rose from the table, went over to the nativity scene on the mantle, grabbed the figure of Mary, and returned triumphantly to his writing. This happy change of events required an entirely new draft of the letter. It began: “Dear God, if you ever want to see your mother again . . .”

Many things change between childhood and maturity. But often not our misguided attempts to cut deals with God. Not a month goes by that I don't receive a question from someone in the church who wants to know, "Pastor Bob, can a woman serve as a pastor in the church?" God's Word does give us an answer to this question. But first we need to take note of a simple fact that is absolutely necessary in order to understand God's heart on this important issue: men and women are different. Check out the chart that secular science has put together listing the different types of energies typically expressed by women and men:

caring ........ accepting
understanding ........ appreciative
respectful ........ trusting
feeling ........ analytical
emotional ........ logical
intuitive ........ rational
nurturing ........ efficient
idealistic ........ practical
vulnerable ........ aggressive

Even beyond this, we know that men and women aren't the same because God's Word declares that they were designed to be different:

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:27 NKJV)

We need to agree on this because once we acknowledge the natural differences in men and women, it makes sense that their roles in the church shouldn't be the same. The Bible tells us that men have been called to be the leaders in the home and in the house of God (1 Corinthians 11:3; 1 Timothy 2:11). Scripture also teaches that women are called to support and follow their leadership (Ephesians 5:22; 1 Timothy 2:12).

God reserves the pastoral position within the body of Christ for men because even though men and women are equal in their importance, they are different in their performance. His heart is that both would be blessed as they embrace their divinely designed differences.

A prophetic dream on Wednesday, May 30

The moral of the story is “A home fellowship group is like the Lord's munition depot for spiritual warfare where we are equipped to do battle.”

A trusted brother in the Lord has prayerfully confirmed to me that I had a prophetic dream. Please read about my dream, then prayerfully consider if the Lord would lead you to offer some feedback.

I dreamed, “A week earlier I was called to help a group in setting up a restaurant. I did various tasks in the kitchen including taking a care of the trash. A week later I received a homemade DVD from the group titled, Operations. I played the video and it told of an incident that happened to group. The group had a program which they would pick up people at the church in a bus then take them to the restaurant. One dark night a group leader was escorting the bus on a moped. The moped was riding closely in front of the bus when he started warning the bus driver to slow down. They didn't not know why but did so. The traffic was heavy on the streets of Philadelphia that night. Then suddenly several serious car accidents happened around the bus. The home group pour out of the bus to assist the victims. As results of the quick response, many lives were saved. Also, they shared the Gospel in deed and word. They continued to restaurant and began asking themselves why did this happen. The group didn't know why this happen to them. As they retold the story and through some prayer time, it was revealed to them that because they were equipped the Lord use them. They continue to praise the Lord God at the restaurant.”

As I was waking up the Lord spoke to me and told to me to go share this dream with this trusted brother. I was to ask him for an interpretation. I know he has the gift of interpretation because he shared a dream he had in front the church as we were sending him on a short term mission trip. As coincident this brother was from the Delaware Valley like me.

In my morning devotions the Lord gave me this Scripture: Acts 2:17
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.”(NKJV)

We are in the last days and Lord can give prophetic dream even to a wretched sinner like me.

This trusted brother told me to share this my home fellowship group leader and ask about share it with my group. I don't know why. But, I have the fear of Jonah. Acts 2:12 “Whatever could this mean?” (NKJV)

'Why did God allow this to happen?' That's a question that has been asked tens of thousands of times in various forms this week. Of course, the reason for those questions is the horrific crime committed on the campus of Virginia Tech earlier this week.

As a matter of fact, a friend just told me about an email he received yesterday from a skeptical acquaintance. The skeptic asked, 'You claim that your God is sovereign and that He is good. So how do you explain this?'

God's truth allows us to comprehend the incomprehensible.

We live in a culture that values things that are large, extravagant, and impossible to miss. For this reason, we’re tempted to look at the struggles in our rather ordinary lives, and consider our victories insignificant if they’re not acknowledged or recognized by others.

But that’s just not true. Victor Hugo, the great French playwright who penned Les Miserables, rightly said our “greatest actions are performed in minor struggles. Life, misfortune, isolation, abandonment and poverty are battlefields which have their heroes–obscure heroes who are at times greater than illustrious heroes.”

It’s not the size of the audience, or the amount of applause, that determines the value of your achievements. Live your life before the one true God. And live it with faith, hope, and love even though you’re not getting accolades for it. Remember, your true character is what you do when no one is looking.

The Headache

The doctor said, "Bill, the good news is I can cure your headaches. The bad news is that it will require castration. You have a very rare condition, which causes your testicles to press on your spine and the pressure creates one hell of a headache. The only way to relieve the pressure is to remove the testicles."

Bill was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He had no choice but to go under the knife. When he left the hospital, he was without a headache for the first time in 20 years, but he felt like he was missing an important part of himself.

As he walked down the street, he realized that he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life.

He saw a men's clothing store and thought, "That's what I need ... A
new suit."

He entered the shop and told the salesman, "I'd like a new suit."

The elderly tailor eyed him briefly and said, "Let's see ... Size 44 Long."

Bill laughed, "That's right, how did you know?

"Been in the business 60 years!" the tailor said.

This is a fellow who's hooked his star to criticizing somebody. There's so many over-the-top things about it. There are lots of churches in Damascus [Syria]. I asked one person. He said maybe two or three hundred in Damascus. Most of them are the traditional churches. There's Syrian Orthodox and there's Greek Orthodox. But I met with the head of the evangelicals. He said they're getting ready to go into the building program because the Presbyterian church he leads—they've run out of space.

I will go anywhere in the world if I'm allowed to preach the gospel without hindrance. I'd go to Iran; I'd go to Syria; I'd go to North Korea. A lot of the criticisms have come from people who politicize the Christian faith. To them, politics is more important than winning people to Christ. In fact, I think one of the greatest damages to the church in the last 20 years has been the politicization of the church. I'm also tired of the church being known simply as a political tool and being co-opted by politicians."

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a
day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of
him when the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty
mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the
students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar
He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the
golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They
agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of
course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar
was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes. "

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and
poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space
between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize
that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important
things---God, your family, your children, your health, your friends and your
favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they
remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things
that matter like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything
else---the small stuff."

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room
for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all
your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the
things that are important to you."

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with
your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take
time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. There will

always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.
Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set your
priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee
represented. The professor smiled and said, "I'm glad you asked."

"The coffee just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem,
There is always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Forty-nine women have enrolled in the InnerChange Freedom Initiative at the Wrightsville prison, which officials will dedicate Friday.

Under the program, inmates live in a separate unit and attend classes on subjects including computer skills and anger management. They also participate in religious devotionals.

After being released from prison, participants receive guidance from a mentor and a local religious group for at least six months.

The program, operated by Prison Fellowship Ministries, was dedicated for the Tucker Unit in June and 99 men are participating in the program. Mark Earley, the program's president and chief executive officer, says the women's program has a capacity for 50 prisoners and the men's unit can take 120."

JERUSALEM – Palestinian terror groups and security organizations in the Gaza Strip received $2 million from a United States source in exchange for the release of Fox News employees Steve Centanni and Olag Wiig, who were kidnapped here last summer, a senior leader of one of the groups suspected of the abductions told WND.

A Compassionate Community

Christians are wealthy people. I'm not speaking in mere monetary terms but in a more significant and spiritual sense. We know why we've been placed here on earth and what we're supposed to do with our lives. We have a sense of identity and acceptance. We enjoy God's grace, forgiveness, and peace. And in addition to all this, we're part of a special community, a compassionate community.

Believers are also bound by a special bond--the love of God, which has been poured out upon our hearts. It fills our lives, overflows, and extends toward other believers, resulting in a network of men and women, brothers and sisters, who love each other in the truest and purest sense. We have one another's welfare at heart and pool our resources in order to meet the needs of our family members in the faith.

I've seen this compassionate community countless times. A single mom needs a new set of tires, and a brother in Christ who sells tires takes care of it. An elderly couple needs help moving, and a group of godly guys pitch in and make the move happen. A college student needs help with his thesis, and another saint who's academically gifted comes alongside to point him in the right direction.

The scenarios are endless, but the principle is always the same. As Christians we're compelled to meet each other's needs because God's love supernaturally motivates us to care for one another. We're interconnected as a compassionate community, which makes us wealthier than those of this world.
