A medevac C-5 aircraft flew her to the Philippines, the nearest U.S. armed forces major medical facility, which was eleven hours away. Two CAT scans and two spinal taps revealed hemorrhaging, probably in the brain. Cindy's commanding officer was a believer, as was Cindy. He initiated prayer for healing for her. Along with other concerned personnel, he was saddened to hear that her husband was being flown in for her surgery--that could only mean that the doctors expected her to die. The officer and a few fellow believers got together to pray, and they pleaded for Cindy's life. In advance of the operation, the medical team did a routine angiogram. To their amazement, it appeared to be perfectly normal. They ran exhaustive tests. Every test came back normal. The doctors canceled the surgery. From the farthest reaches of the earth, the prayer of faithful friends had been heard and answered on her behalf. Her illness never recurred. Point to Ponder: The concern of a commanding officer for the troops is an earthly metaphor for God's love for us. As our commander in the spiritual battle, He is responsible for our well-being, for our placement in the conflict, and for our care when we are injured or ill. He knows about our special abilities, and He places us in positions that best suit our talents. And when we fall into difficulties or dangers, He stirs up our fellow soldiers to pray for us and to come to our aid. Most important of all, God goes ahead of us into the most dangerous warfare, fighting for us, clearing a safe pathway for us through the deadly assault of the enemy. The prophecy above was delivered by the prophet Joel sometime around 800 B.C. It's a prophecy packed with a promise that was almost unthinkable at the time: God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh--men and women, young and old.

This was amazing because up until that time, God's Spirit only had come upon certain people for certain situations, such as Moses' elders (Numbers 11:25) and Samson (Judges 14:19). It had been like that for many centuries until God's Spirit was poured out upon the early church:

Suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:2-4 NKJV)

Bystanders couldn't figure out what was happening, and assumed that the first disciples were drunk. Peter stood up and set the record straight:

'But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. . . . I will pour out My Spirit in those days . . . .'' (Acts 2:16-18 NKJV)

Joel's prophecy had been fulfilled and continues to be fulfilled as we who comprise the Christian church are filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). True to His Word, God has poured out His Spirit on all flesh--men and women, young and old, Jew and Gentile. Anyone from anywhere can experience the blessing of God's Spirit if he or she is in Christ (Galatians 3:28)."

Located 26 miles southwest of Asheville, Mount Pisgah is at a high elevation - 5,700 feet – and offers panoramic views of North Carolina Mountains including Cold Mountain. Take Interstate I-40 West from Asheville to the Candler/Enka exit. Turn right onto U.S. 19/23 West and follow 19/23 for several miles. Turn left onto NC 151. Originally an access road to Mount Pisgah, this road makes a winding assent, then twists steeply for the last few miles before reaching the Parkway. At the Blue Ridge Parkway turn right toward Mount Pisgah. Follow the Parkway South to Milepost 407.6 where you will find parking and the trailhead to Mount Pisgah. Theologians and Bible teachers have told many of us that God is “impassable,” that he does not experience emotion as we humans do. Is that what you find when you read Isaiah or Jeremiah or Hosea? A. W. Tozer pleads in The Pursuit of God: “We have almost forgotten that God is a person . . . and in the deep of his mighty nature he thinks, wills, enjoys, feels, loves, desires and suffers as any other person may.”

In Disappointment with God, Phil Yancey tells of going to a cabin in the mountains in Colorado to face his doubts about God and to read the Bible for himself. What he discovered changed his life:

Simply reading the Bible, I encountered not a misty vapor but an actual Person. A Person as unique and distinctive and colorful as any person I know. God has deep emotions; he feels delight and frustration and anger . . . As I read through the Bible in my winter aerie, I marveled at how much God lets human beings affect him. I was unprepared for the joy and anguish— in short, the passion—of the God of the Universe. By studying “about” God, by taming him and reducing him to words and concepts that could be filed away in alphabetical order, I had lost the force of the passionate relationship God seeks above all else. The people who related to God best—Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah—treated him with startling familiarity. Another great Ethiopian idiosyncrasy that confounds many travelers is the calendar. Based on the Julian system, it is roughly 7 ½ years ‘behind’ the Western Gregorian calendar. The year 2006-07 is thus ‘1999’ in the Ethiopian calendar, where ‘1999’ begins in September 2006. Just to confuse you thoroughly, the Ethiopian fiscal year begins on 8 July, and the Ethiopian New Year is rung in on 11 September. The Julian calendar is named after Julius Caeser, and developed as a result of a dispute over the exact date of Christ’s birth. The Julian calendar is made up of 12 months of 30 days each and a 13^th month of five or six days. Hence the Ethiopian Tourism Council challenge to “Visit Ethiopia and be seven years younger”!

Of course, small groups have become a part of the programming most churches offer their people. For the most part, they are disappointing and short-lived—by the very admission of those who try them. There are two reasons. One, you can’t just throw a random group of people together for a twelve-week study of some kind and expect them to become intimate allies. The sort of devotion we want and need takes place within a shared life. Over the years our fellowship has gone camping together. We play together; help one another move; paint a room; find work. We throw great parties. We fight for each other, live in the Four Streams. This is how it was meant to be.

The Religious Spirit 09/19/2006 The Religious Spirit has turned discipleship into a soul-killing exercise of principles. Most folks don’t even know they can walk with God, hear his voice. He’s stigmatized counseling as a profession for sick patients, and so the wounds of our hearts never get healed. He’s taken healing away from us almost entirely, so that we sit in pews as broken people feeling guilty because we can’t live the life we’re supposed to live. And he takes warfare and mocks it, stigmatizes it as well so that most of the church knows almost nothing about how to break strongholds, set captives free. Finally, the Religious Spirit makes it next to impossible for a person to break free by spreading the lie that there is no war. Be honest—how many Christians do you know who practice spiritual warfare as a normal, necessary, daily part of the Christian life? Some of my dearest friends pull back from this stream and sort of cast a concerned look over me when I suggest it’s going on. Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war? You’ve got to be kidding me. We’re not advancing the kingdom, we’re holding car washes. We gave up the hymn not so much for reasons of musical fashion but because we felt ridiculous singing it, as you do when asked to sing “Happy Birthday” in a restaurant to a perfect stranger. We don’t sing it ’cause it ain’t true. We have acquiesced. We have surrendered without a fight. The river is approximately 220 miles (350 km) long. It rises in the Appalachian Mountains and drains into Piedmont, and is impounded through series of reservoirs for flood control and hydroelectricity.

It rises in the Blue Ridge Mountains in western McDowell County, North Carolina, approximately 20 miles (30 km) east of Asheville. It flows ENE, passing north of Morganton, then southeast through the Lake Norman reservoir. From Lake Norman it flows south, passing west of Charlotte, then flowing through the Mountain Island Lake and Lake Wylie reservoirs, where it forms approximately 10 miles (15 km) of the border between North Carolina and South Carolina. It flows into northern South Carolina, passing east of Rock Hill, then through Fishing Creek Reservoir near Great Falls, and then into the Lake Wateree reservoir, approximately 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Columbia. Downstream from Lake Wateree, it becomes the Wateree River."

What God Sees When He Sees You 08/29/2006 Your sin has been dealt with. Your Father has removed it from you "as far as the east is from the west" (Ps. 103:12). Your sins have been washed away (1 Cor. 6:11). When God looks at you he does not see your sin. He has not one condemning thought toward you (Rom. 8:1). But that's not all. You have a new heart. That's the promise of the new covenant: "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws" (Ezek. 36:26 –27). There's a reason that it's called good news. Too many Christians today are living back in the old covenant. They've had Jeremiah 17:9 drilled into them and they walk around believing my heart is deceitfully wicked. Not anymore it's not. Read the rest of the book. In Jeremiah 31:33, God announces the cure for all that: "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people." Gentlemen,

In my devotions today I was impacted through a Scripture verse, 2 Thessalonians 3:5. As we venture into the exploring for the hidden desires of a man's heart, consider this, "Now may the Lord direct your hearts into…" My struggle is confusing the emotions/feelings with my heart's desire. Here Paul, a man's man, exhorts us to choose this "now." We may allow the Lord to "direct" us. Therefore the desires of our heart are given by the Lord and our emotions/feelings flows from our hearts as a result. Now we are embraced the "love" and "patience" of our Lord as He expresses them. Consider also 1 Chronicles 29:18, "O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep this forever in the intent of the thoughts of the heart of Your people, and fix their heart towards You. We have a choice. As we express our next emotions, could they be from a hidden desire in our masculine hearts?

If choose to continue reading in 2 Thessalonians 3, Paul give us some specific direction on how we should walk. This walk is easier to take when a man has found the desires of his heart. Agree? Amen!

We may call it a lot of different things-business, occupation, career, calling, vocation, livelihood, practice, or profession-but in the end, it's all the same thing . . . work. Something often happens in our hearts when the word work is mentioned, a heaviness that makes our shoulders slump.

The average person doesn't enjoy working. Many refer to the start of the work week as Monday moanin'. Why is that? How is it that the human race has come to have such resentment for something that's such an integral part of life?

The answer is given to us in the first few chapters of Genesis. God created man and gave him the responsibility to tend, serve, and care for the rest of His creation (Genesis 1:15). This was intended to give man a sense of purpose and fulfillment. However, when man sinned, it altered his environment. The world became a hostile place-tending turned into toiling; serving, into sweating; and caring for God's creation, into a curse. This is the world's outlook on work. It's"

Imagine if I went to the pulpit on a Sunday morning and said, Today's message is going to be a little bit different. You see, people kept interrupting me on my normal study day and so I had to bump it over to Saturday. But because my son had a baseball game that morning, which went into extra innings, I couldn't focus on the Word until late in the afternoon. And then, when I got to my office, I happened to turn on the T.V. and I saw that they were running a documentary on a band that I used to be involved with. Before I knew it, the time had slipped away. So I hope you don't mind, but today we're going to have a mini-message.

How irresponsible! And yet, this analogy contains three things that I've found we frequently do when our character is lacking in the area of responsibility: we'll find fault with others (people kept interrupting me), we'll cast blame (my son had a baseball game), and we'll make excuses (it was a band that I used to be involved with). But a responsible heart doesn't hide behind these rationalizations. It doesn't find fault in others, cast blame, or make excuses but, instead, owns up to its responsibilities. Christians with this kind of character recognize that they are responsible for the choices they make in life. They don't point to someone else or the circumstances they were born into.

In an age where 'passing the buck' has almost become an art-form, the family of God needs to do a better job of owning up and being responsible for its own conduct. When the world sees us do this, it will have more respect for and be more receptive to what we have to say.
