A Christmas Question

The old men of Kunsock congregated under the shade of a large mango tree. A
brisk harmattan wind whistled through the branches and whipped up little
eddies of dust around their feet but no one seemed to notice. Several men
were talking at the same time in an animated discussion. Suddenly the oldest
man in the village raised his voice and there was silence. "It's just not
possible for a woman to have a child without having known a man. Just who
was the father of this child?"
Before Togolese translators Joel and Caleb had time to reply, several others
said, "Why, God, of course. Haven't we just heard that the child will be
called the Son of God? And didn't the angel say that nothing is impossible
with God?"
The discussion raged on.
The translators were testing chapter 1 of Luke's Gospel in Moba, a language
of northern Togo. None of those who come to the testing sessions at Kunsock
are Christians. And though there are some Christians in this village, there
is no church. But, even if there were a church, it is unlikely that any of
these village elders would darken its doors. Testing sessions provide a
unique opportunity for these men to hear for themselves-in a non-threatening
way-what the Word of God says.
The discussion doesn't end once the testing is completed.
Last week after one of the sessions, a woman approached Joel to ask whether
women were allowed to come too. She often heard the men talking about what
they had discussed at the meeting and it sounded so interesting. Could she?
The old men take these sessions very seriously. The Word of God is indeed
powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword. Pray for translators to be
sensitive to the Spirit of God. They need to answer questions that
inevitably arise when what is heard from God's Word challenges Moba
traditional worldview and beliefs.
One of these beliefs concerns God's attitude towards his creation. The Moba
believe that God created the world. But because man is so small in
comparison to God, he cannot influence God's decisions or choices concerning
present or future events. Needs and problems are solved by consulting the
ancestors or using occult power, but never by asking God.
A couple of weeks ago one of the old men didn't turn up for the testing
session. "He's ill," they told the translators.
"Would you like us to pray that God would heal him so that he can come to
the next session?" asked Joel. Bemused, the men agreed. Joel prayed in Moba
talking to God as his Father and mentioning His care for this sick man. The
men, flabbergasted, had never heard anyone talk to God in such a personal
way. Unanimous that this was a good thing, they asked, "Would you pray for
us each time you come?"
And just how did the discussion on the virgin birth end? The old men pointed
out to their senior that God created the first man and woman by a miracle.
So why would it be difficult for Him to cause Jesus to be conceived
miraculously?
He refused to accept it. Keenly aware of the issues involved, however, he
threw out this challenge: "Do you realize, that if you really believe this,
you will have to become Christians?"

Prayer Parnters update 12/23/04
Dear Prayer Partners,
If I had one word to describe this year in my ministry and my walk with the
Lord it would be grace. Yes, Christmas is a time to reflect on God's Grace to send the baby Jesus. However, I hope New Year's Eve is a time of personal reflection on how God's
Grace entered into your life this year. We ask for His will in 2005.
This year gave me many stories of blessings. Therefore, here is one:
The JAARS message center received a call from Samaritan's Purse asking for
more volunteers. A group of us sensed the call to go for the day. The message said, "The warehouse STILL needs more help going through boxes, they won't be able to finish tonight."
The Charlotte Processing Center for Operation Christmas Child is one of six
major warehouses for the ministry. We walked in and were awe-struck by this huge place filled with shoeboxes. The information board said they had packed and processed over 1.55 million
shoeboxes. They had expected to do over 1.7 million by the end of the day. Every shoebox touched I thought I was part of serving a child somewhere. We finished well. When leaving to the parking lot we saw an overseas shipping container filled with cardboard boxes of the prepared shoeboxes. Wow, what blessing to participate in this Christmas Joy!

I heard second-hand that estimates are they processed 1.8 million shoeboxes.

6. Number of languages with some or all of the Bible: 2,355. Of these,
414 have an adequate Bible, 1,068 have an adequate New Testament, and 873
have at least one book of the Bible. [2003 statistics from the United Bible

7. Number of new language programs begun in Bibleless language
communities worldwide since start of Vision 2025 (Oct 1999): 356 (93 in
2004) and 306 of those were with Wycliffe involvement (82 in 2004).

personnel involvement: 2 Bibles; 6 New Testaments; 13 the JESUS film
scripts; 16 video scripts featuring the Gospel of Luke; 3 video scripts
featuring Genesis.

with Wycliffe personnel involved: 611 languages representing over 76 million
people.
10. Number of countries represented by the languages in which Wycliffe
staff are working: more than 70. This includes work among people who live

Prayer Partners update 10/25/04 j
1. WBT Vision 2025 is “Scripture translation progress in every language that needs it by the year 2025.” Please embrace this vision with me. If the Lord wills, we can partnership to grow God’s Kingdom through Bible Translation and the technology required.
2. Please pray for JAARS Computer Technical Conference. Web link: J A A R S: Computer Technical Conference 2004. Over 300 are registered. I will be volunteering in the kitchen and prayer ministry. Also, please pray for an Open Forum on 11/5 for the Enterprise Help Desk project, which I began that assignment last summer.
3. Thank the Lord for His provision and your continue support. The Lord has provided for the car repairs and replacing my eyeglasses. This has allowed me to stay focused on my ministry.
4. Please pray for travel mercies as I am planning to visit New Jersey on Thanksgiving after the conferences.
5. Also pray for the Calvary Kids Club on our Mid-Week services at my local church. The crafts were a hit with kids. We have been teaching with a theme about missions. The JAARS Center has a great Resource Room for these crafts.
6. Praise the Lord I was able to sell the church organ on eBay to a man who buys organs and donates them to needy churches.
7. Please pray as I seek the Lord’s direction for possible Short Term Mission trips.
