We live in a culture that values things that are large, extravagant, and impossible to miss. For this reason, we’re tempted to look at the struggles in our rather ordinary lives, and consider our victories insignificant if they’re not acknowledged or recognized by others.

But that’s just not true. Victor Hugo, the great French playwright who penned Les Miserables, rightly said our “greatest actions are performed in minor struggles. Life, misfortune, isolation, abandonment and poverty are battlefields which have their heroes–obscure heroes who are at times greater than illustrious heroes.”

It’s not the size of the audience, or the amount of applause, that determines the value of your achievements. Live your life before the one true God. And live it with faith, hope, and love even though you’re not getting accolades for it. Remember, your true character is what you do when no one is looking.

The Headache

The doctor said, "Bill, the good news is I can cure your headaches. The bad news is that it will require castration. You have a very rare condition, which causes your testicles to press on your spine and the pressure creates one hell of a headache. The only way to relieve the pressure is to remove the testicles."

Bill was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He had no choice but to go under the knife. When he left the hospital, he was without a headache for the first time in 20 years, but he felt like he was missing an important part of himself.

As he walked down the street, he realized that he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life.

He saw a men's clothing store and thought, "That's what I need ... A

This is a fellow who's hooked his star to criticizing somebody. There's so many over-the-top things about it. There are lots of churches in Damascus [Syria]. I asked one person. He said maybe two or three hundred in Damascus. Most of them are the traditional churches. There's Syrian Orthodox and there's Greek Orthodox. But I met with the head of the evangelicals. When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a
day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of
him when the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty
mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the
students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar
He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the
golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They
agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of
course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar
was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes. "

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and
poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space
between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize
that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important
things---God, your family, your children, your health, your friends and your
favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they
remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things
that matter like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything
else---the small stuff."

"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room
for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all
your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the
things that are important to you."

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with
your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take
time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. There will

always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.
Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set your
priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee
represented. The professor smiled and said, "I'm glad you asked."

"The coffee just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem,

Forty-nine women have enrolled in the InnerChange Freedom Initiative at the Wrightsville prison, which officials will dedicate Friday.

Under the program, inmates live in a separate unit and attend classes on subjects including computer skills and anger management. They also participate in religious devotionals.

After being released from prison, participants receive guidance from a mentor and a local religious group for at least six months.

The program, operated by Prison Fellowship Ministries, was dedicated for the Tucker Unit in June and 99 men are participating in the program. Mark Earley, the program's president and chief executive officer, says the women's program has a capacity for 50 prisoners and the men's unit can take 120."

Christians are wealthy people. I'm not speaking in mere monetary terms but in a more significant and spiritual sense. We know why we've been placed here on earth and what we're supposed to do with our lives. We have a sense of identity and acceptance. We enjoy God's grace, forgiveness, and peace. And in addition to all this, we're part of a special community, a compassionate community.

Believers are also bound by a special bond--the love of God, which has been poured out upon our hearts. It fills our lives, overflows, and extends toward other believers, resulting in a network of men and women, brothers and sisters, who love each other in the truest and purest sense. We have one another's welfare at heart and pool our resources in order to meet the needs of our family members in the faith.

I've seen this compassionate community countless times. A single mom needs a new set of tires, and a brother in Christ who sells tires takes care of it. A medevac C-5 aircraft flew her to the Philippines, the nearest U.S. armed forces major medical facility, which was eleven hours away. Theologians and Bible teachers have told many of us that God is “impassable,” that he does not experience emotion as we humans do. Is that what you find when you read Isaiah or Jeremiah or Hosea? A. W. Tozer pleads in The Pursuit of God: “We have almost forgotten that God is a person . . . and in the deep of his mighty nature he thinks, wills, enjoys, feels, loves, desires and suffers as any other person may.”

In Disappointment with God, Phil Yancey tells of going to a cabin in the mountains in Colorado to face his doubts about God and to read the Bible for himself. What he discovered changed his life:

Simply reading the Bible, I encountered not a misty vapor but an actual Person. A Person as unique and distinctive and colorful as any person I know. God has deep emotions; he feels delight and frustration and anger . . . As I read through the Bible in my winter aerie, I marveled at how much God lets human beings affect him. I was unprepared for the joy and anguish— in short, the passion—of the God of the Universe. The year 2006-07 is thus ‘1999’ in the Ethiopian calendar, where ‘1999’ begins in September 2006. Just to confuse you thoroughly, the Ethiopian fiscal year begins on 8 July, and the Ethiopian New Year is rung in on 11 September. The Julian calendar is named after Julius Caeser, and developed as a result of a dispute over the exact date of Christ’s birth. The Julian calendar is made up of 12 months of 30 days each and a 13^th month of five or six days. Hence the Ethiopian Tourism Council challenge to “Visit Ethiopia and be seven years younger”!

Of course, small groups have become a part of the programming most churches offer their people. For the most part, they are disappointing and short-lived—by the very admission of those who try them. There are two reasons. One, you can’t just throw a random group of people together for a twelve-week study of some kind and expect them to become intimate allies. The sort of devotion we want and need takes place within a shared life. Over the years our fellowship has gone camping together. We play together; help one another move; paint a room; find work. We throw great parties. We fight for each other, live in the Four Streams. This is how it was meant to be.

The Religious Spirit 09/19/2006 The Religious Spirit has turned discipleship into a soul-killing exercise of principles. Most folks don’t even know they can walk with God, hear his voice. He’s stigmatized counseling as a profession for sick patients, and so the wounds of our hearts never get healed. He’s taken healing away from us almost entirely, so that we sit in pews as broken people feeling guilty because we can’t live the life we’re supposed to live. And he takes warfare and mocks it, stigmatizes it as well so that most of the church knows almost nothing about how to break strongholds, set captives free. Finally, the Religious Spirit makes it next to impossible for a person to break free by spreading the lie that there is no war. Be honest—how many Christians do you know who practice spiritual warfare as a normal, necessary, daily part of the Christian life? Some of my dearest friends pull back from this stream and sort of cast a concerned look over me when I suggest it’s going on. Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war? You’ve got to be kidding me. We’re not advancing the kingdom, we’re holding car washes. Catawba River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "The Catawba River is a tributary of the Wateree River in the U.S. states of North Carolina and South Carolina. The river is approximately 220 miles (350 km) long. It rises in the Appalachian Mountains and drains into Piedmont, and is impounded through series of reservoirs for flood control and hydroelectricity.

It rises in the Blue Ridge Mountains in western McDowell County, North Carolina, approximately 20 miles (30 km) east of Asheville. It flows ENE, passing north of Morganton, then southeast through the Lake Norman reservoir. From Lake Norman it flows south, passing west of Charlotte, then flowing through the Mountain Island Lake and Lake Wylie reservoirs, where it forms approximately 10 miles (15 km) of the border between North Carolina and South Carolina. It flows into northern South Carolina, passing east of Rock Hill, then through Fishing Creek Reservoir near Great Falls, and then into the Lake Wateree reservoir, approximately 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Columbia. Downstream from Lake Wateree, it becomes the Wateree River."

When we speak of rail-trails, people can expect that these trails will have gentle or level grades and wide rights of way suitable for multiple uses: walking, bicycling, or horseback riding. With bridges over streams and tunnels through hills, rail-trails also offer clear and easy means to negotiate geographic obstacles.

Mid-Atlantic Rail-Trails including Washington and Baltimore: "What is a Rail Trail? A Rail Trail is a recreational path which has been built in the right-of-way of an abandoned railroad. As a result of the Interstate Highway System, tens of thousands of miles of railroads have been abandoned over the past several decades. While some of these railroads have become rail trails, many of these right-of-ways are now being considered for conversion to some sort of 'green way' or recreation path. Typically, the rails and ties are removed and then the surface is improved to allow hiking ,biking, rollerblading, and/or horseback riding.

Rail trails can be great for biking and blading because railroads are designed to have very small grades, thus the resulting rail trail is nearly all flat. Also, in many situations, the right-of-ways exist in undeveloped areas away from the the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, it should be noted that all rail trails are not created equal. While some trails have been paved or had some type of surface improvement, other trails may remain in a 'original ballast' condition which is typically muddy and rocky (not suitable for blading or skinny tires!).
